The Utah War
The Utah War was a scary time for many of the people living in the Utah Territory in the 1850's.
Sometimes, how I teach this in class is by dividing my students up into a couple of groups, and having them read the article below, together. I assign each group a person to focus on, and tell them to be an expert on that person.
After all groups have read the article, I list the following people on the board: James Buchanan, Brigham Young, W.W. Drummond, Alfred Cumming, Albert Sydney Johnston, and Thomas Kane. I then have the different groups explain what each person's job was.
I then tell the whole story of the Utah War, making note of each person's contribution to the war.
