Utah Constitution Scavenger Hunt

Writing a state constitution was the last hurdle Utah had to overcome to become a state. Today we are going to be exploring the Utah State Constitution a little bit, but keep in mind that it has changed over time.

Roman numeral work like this:

I=1

V=5

X=10

Roman numerals work by combining the letters together to get the value. For example, III=3 (1+1+1), XII=12 (10+1+1), and VI=6 (5+1)

Roman numerals are typically listed from largest number to smallest number.

WHEN you see a smaller number on the left-hand side of a larger number (like IV), that means that you subtract the smaller number from the larger number. For example, IV=4 (5-1) and IX=9 (10-1)

There might be a series like this in the middle of a larger number (such as XIV). In this case, you complete the subtraction of the smaller left number from the bigger right number, then take that total and add it to the other values. For example, XIV=14 ( (5-1)+10) or XIX=19 ( (10-1)+10).

Roman numerals are used throughout legal documents and other types of documents, so knowing how they're used will be useful.
